It was envisioned to provide computer facilities to serve the needs of the College and in consideration of the major role of the College in teacher training and education. Administration The Model Information Technology Classroom (MITC) is the computing and networking center of the U.P. College of Education. Inaugurated on February 13, 1998, the MITC has been the delivering the information technology services to the College through its staff and facilities. The MITC is organized into different functional areas: (1) The Administrative and Technical Office; (2) the Research, Evaluation and Projects Office; and (3) The Support Services Office. Located at the Ground Floor of the Benitez Hall, the MITC was designed to provide the direction of an information technology program of the College of Education. - The MITC Director
- The MITC is managed by a Director who is a member of the College of Education faculty.
- The Director has the full and final authority on all matters concerning the MITC.
- The Director will coordinate and supervise all the offices and staff of the MITC.
The MITC Facility The MITC Classroom The computer classroom was designed to be the venue of the information technology courses of the College. The classroom can accommodate 30 students at every session. It is provided with adequate lighting and ventilation for a comfortable learning environment. Equipment and FacilitiesThe classroom is equipped with 30 Pentium 200 MMX workstations for every student enrolled. Each workstation has 16 MB memory, 2.5 gigabytes of hard disk space, 14 inch color monitor, 1.44 floppy drive and are connected to the network to enable the learners to appreciate local area networks and Internet browsing The teacher/presentor's central computer is a multimedia computer connected to the MITC network. It is a Pentium 200 MMX machine with 32 MB memory, with a 32-speed CD ROM drive, sound card, speakers, 2.5 gigabytes of hard disk space, 1.44 floppy drive and a 14 inch color monitor. It is also attached to a portable multimedia projector which can display images at 700 lumens and amplify the sound from the computer. This projector can be connected simultaneously to any video device and another computer. This is placed in an elevated platform and table which houses the network cables and the hubs used in the classroom network facilities. This customized table also has the adjusted elevation for the multimedia projector to minimize risks by constant movement. The users of the classroom have access to two (2) dot-matrix printers attached to two workstations. Two large white boards are provided for the teacher's use as well as a motorized projection screen for the computer display. Other peripherals may be available upon arrangement with MITC staff. SoftwareAll workstations have been installed with licensed Microsoft Windows 98 operating systems and Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition and SPSS 7.0. Planned Improvements to the Classroom By the start of Second Semester 2000 - 2001, the 30 computers in the classroom will be upgraded into multimedia machines to enable students to evaluate software in CD-ROM format. Each workstation will be equipped with a communication headset. The teacher will be provided a computer with the same specifications as the students to be positioned near the central computer. An add-on networking software will be installed to enable the teacher to communicate, view and control the students' monitor without moving around the classroom THE MITC Services Section One of the primary aims of the MITC is to provide computing services to faculty, staff and students of the College. To do this, a Services Section was incorporated with the MITC to answer this need. Student Services Section Students of the College are allowed to use the Services Section for various computer-related purposes. It is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5 PM with a one hour break from 12 - 1 PM. The student laboratory has thirteen (13) Pentium 200 MMX computers with the same configuration as the classroom computers. These are all connected to the network. Five are connected to the Direct Dial-Up Server . Charges for Internet through the direct dial-up system are twice the normal charge. Faculty Services Section Faculty and staff members of the College are encouraged to use the Faculty Services Section located at the Mezzanine Floor of the MITC. It is open from Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5 PM. The faculty laboratory has six (6) Pentium 200 MMX computers with the same configuration as the classroom computers. These are all likewise, connected to the network. Internet connection is bound to the Diliman Network. MITC Services Electronic Mail (E-mail) E-mail services are available to the faculty, staff and students of the College of Education. Faculty and staff e-mail accounts are made and maintained in the mail server connected to the Diliman Network. Student e-mail accounts are to be made and maintained in the Curricula mail server. Faculty and staff will have e-mail addresses with the format yourname@ced.upd.edu.ph while students will have addresses with the format yourname@upeduk.curricula.net. Internet Internet browsing through a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP) is available at the Services Section for a fee. Neither the College nor the University subsidizes this resource. As such, its continuation will depend on the revenues the Services Section can generate for this purpose. At present, only five workstations uses the direct dial-up facility. The College of Education Web Page The College of Education web page is a project of the MITC and can be accessed through web address http://www.upd.edu.ph/~ced. The web page will be maintained and updated by the REP Office of the MITC and will reflect the official information concerning the College.
